Feds send half a pound of pot to little old lady every monthSince 1976, Elvy Musikka has been getting a canister every month of more than 300 neatly rolled cigarettes, filled with high-grade weed, free from the federal government. She and 13 others, all suffering from various medical complaints, were selected in 1976 to test the therapeutic effectiveness of smoking a lot of marijuana. (Sounds like the ’70s, all right). Of the 14 original members, only four are still living, and still get their monthly supply of a half-pound of weed, grown in sunny North Carolina. The program was closed to new patients in 1992, amid the height of the “War on Drugs” campaign, but the government has quietly kept supplying the four survivors “for compassionate reasons.”
